Don’t Kill Your Darlings! Fake Their Deaths Instead
A check in with me and a look at a draft of one of my published pieces
This piece is a long one, so click here to see it online!
Hi all!
I hope you are all doing better than I am!
While Nov-Dec 2021 were the most stressful months of my life, these past few weeks are certainly trying to top that record…
On the 1st of February, I will be having my breast reduction surgery! For those who've been following me for a while, you'll know this has been years in the making. In truth, I've wanted the surgery ever since my classmates in the UK referred to me as "the Black girl with the massive tits".
I was meant to have the surgery in 2020, and then you know what happened. But the time is now!
So this month has been preparing for my time off from work. My doctor has advised me to take at least 2 weeks off, but that really isn't an option as a business owner and self-employed person. But, I will give it my best shot - hence the stress to get things done.
In essence, I am sorry this newsletter is late!
Weekly check in
In trying to get everything done to ensure I can recover peacefully, I am burning myself out.
I’m currently working on a bunch of articles set to be handed in this week, and I am also working on edits for a couple more. On top of that, the wonderful children have brought home the plague (read: stomach bug), and I seem to be the only person who has caught it!
I love my baby siblings, but cleaning up your brother’s type 7 stools at 4am will change a person. Add in some random power outages and what we have is a mess! It’s no wonder my heart wanted to pop out of my chest the other day!
Now, all this is was a preamble to explain a) the lateness of this newsletter and b) the change in content. Originally I’d wanted to do a piece on the latest British Vogue cover. Alas, it’s already Wednesday, so there is no time. Here is a summary:
We have all seen Insecure and Moonlight. We know what good lighting on dark-skinned people looks like. This cover is no excuse. It is possible to have them in black and still not blend into one another. British Vogue usually does so well, but this is a call to do better.
Nevertheless, just because the initial plan failed doesn’t mean I have nothing to provide! So, let’s get into the focus of this article where I’ll be sharing with you the original draft to one of my published pieces
